A Digital Brush Cookbook

You saw this awesome graphic, and you've been struggling to reproduce it in Photoshop. The brush strokes are recognizable. It's obviously made using the Grass brush (or the leaf brush, or a chalk brush, etc), but HOW did the artist make the effect?

If you've ever found yourself in this position, this book is for you. Page after page of brush examples, along with the exact settings needed to reproduce it. Each stock brush is covered, giving literally thousands of easily cusomizeable brushes right at your fingertips.

Now, if you're looking for a book full of tutorials, you're going to be VERY disappointed when you open this book. This is NOT a project-based, step-by-step walk through. The aim here was NOT to teach you the techniques for making new projects. Each page presents examples of different brush strokes, and the tool settings used to make the stroke. There's no discussion, no ideas on using the brush strokes in various projects, just example after example of different strokes.

So, if you're looking for tutorials, look elsewhere. But if you're just looking for an idea to put the perfect finishing touch on a project, a quick thumb through might be just what you need. This tool is extremely valuable for graphic artists or anyone who likes to use photoshop for digital painting.

Great book, but it's the same as "Photoshop Brush Directory"

This looks to be a really good book. However, it is EXACTLY the same book, same author, same everything, a different title slapped on, different ISBN numbers, as Photoshop Brush Directory. One cost $7, the other $32. Get whichever is cheaper.

Fantastic Photoshop brush resource. A time saver.

It seems there are are two publishers for this book. Peachpit Press published one titled Best Digital Brushes for Photoshop: A unique directory of over 4,000 digital brush effects, and how to achieve them with the cover you see here. The other's from RotoVision which is the one I have. Both are 416 pages and the author Susannah Hall is the same.

The book covers Photoshop CS5 so some new features would not be found in previous versions of Photoshop. It starts off with a brush primer showing what they are capable of with artist examples and then there's the useful section of creating your own Photoshop brushes with brush settings.

Next up is the brush directory with over 300 pages featuring 4000 brush selections. This is an incredibly convenient source of custom Photoshop brushes. It's so quick to browse through the pages and pick a brush than to manually creating one by trial and error. There are no tutorials but based on the first chapter, you'll have no problem finding out where to tweak the brushes.

Each brush featured has their brush stroke shown. The main default brush is picked, and the other brushes modified with different customised settings. All the customised settings are shown. Selected ones have examples of how backgrounds would look when filled with the brush stroke.

At the back of the book are additional content on how to use layers, blending modes and adjustment layers. Those are just bonus material, nice to have but not totally related to the brushes.

This is a fantastic resource. A time saver.

Many years of experience

Dr Baker is an ENT surgeon practicing facial plastic surgery. With this second edition he shares with the readers his many years of operative experience with fine case presentations. My personal oppinion is that one can never own to many books, especially when it comes to operative technique and case solutions. Overall the book is beutifully illustrated and contains many excellent flap designes and clever solutions that actually work. Dr Baker is a skilful surgeon and has a wide experience in small flap surgery of the face. His strong areas are the ear and nose and the nasolabial flap, forehead and glabellar flap. Oculoplastics are better covered elsewhere and microsurgery and distant flaps does not belong to this publication in my oppinion. This is a good flap book that I can recommend to anyone confronted by surgical defects in the head and neck area. If one had to chose just one book I would recommend Ian Jacksons lokal flaps of the head and neck as my first choice for the same price as it contains all the basic and more advanced flaps and skips out the confusing and often unnessessary variations that propably caused more problems then they solved. The DVD is a nice addition but doesn't add a whole lot to the book.

The Bible of Facial Flaps

This text is simply the best text available for comprehensive local flap reconstruction in the head and neck. If you do these procedures, get this text. This edition included eye lid reconstruction. You will not be disappointed. Also, the design and photos are a thing of beauty. Thank you Shan Baker.

A comprehensive and generous book

The downside of many textbooks on plastic surgery is that they often get lost in Academese: there is much recounting of history, anatomy, principles, descriptions of downfalls, but there are few actual step-by-step illustrations of technique. In surgery, and in plastic surgery in particular, a picture is worth a thousand words. Several books by imminent plastic surgeons and facial plastic surgeons are unsatisfactory in this fashion. The chapters are long, but useful guidance is in short supply. In addition, many plastic surgery texts are edited by a leading author, but chapters are written by several authors of varying quality. I own several of these textbooks.

Dr. Baker's textbook is the unique, and uniquely generous, exception. The textbook benefits from his many years as surgeon and teacher, addressing a plenitude of problems in facial plastic surgery, both cosmetic and reconstructive. The reconstructive problems address local skin flaps of every size and nature, from trauma to cancer to scar revisions. He discusses his choices for various flaps and the possible pitfalls of each, and illustrates with many, many photographs, of both successes and failures. He also illustrates longterm follow up (several years later) of several patients, which is instructive to the beginning facial reconstructive surgeon as he or she learns not only about surgery but also wound healing. The writing of the book is particularly good. Clear, concise, and informative, the author shows his experience as a consummate teacher.

Ian Jackson's book on local flaps is a great basis to begin learning about flaps, and the schematic illustrations are wonderful. However, Baker's text is far more comprehensive, and the techniques described will offer more variety in the facial plastic surgeon's armamentarium. Obviously, many defects in the head and neck can be reconstructed a myriad of ways, and no textbook is comprehensive. However, it gives the reader a wide appreciation of the choices and consequences of various reconstructive methods. In my opinion, the book is worth every penny and more.

About the Author
David Krogh has been writing about science for 24 years in newspapers, magazines, books, and for educational institutions. He is the author of "Smoking: The Artificial Passion," an account of the pharmacological and cultural motivations behind the use of tobacco, which was nominated for the "Los Angeles"" Times" Book Prize in Science and Technology. In 1994, he began work on what would become "Biology: A Guide to the Natural World," and in 1999 he completed its first edition. Since then, he has produced three more editions of "A Guide to the Natural World" along with a second textbook, "A Brief Guide to Biology," He holds bachelor's degrees in journalism and history from the University of Missouri.

Biology -- A Guide to the Natural World

I found this book to much easier to read and understand from all the previous textbooks assigned to biology courses. The graphics and tables and examples are completely explained. The format asks questions and answers them in a simple, easily understandable text -- not like the mumbo jumbo that a person would have to read over and over to finally understand its meaning.

Confusing Text Book With Errors In Reference Section

There were many formatting errors in this book, such as the glossary columns being switched around-"G" doesn't belong in the middle of the "F" vocab. Some of the page #'s listed in the index were not correct. If you must use this book then you should know that the info can normally be found close to the page listed in the index. The figures/tables were very useful and restated the text in an organized manner, which helped the flow of the writing.

I hate biology, but...

This book is easy going, plus it arrived on time for my classes... even though it's paperback and a bit thick, if I were a teacher I would suggest it to my colleagues. One thing I regret is not getting the study guide materials too.
