About the Author
Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade College for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. This is a great aid when I'm doing my homework. If I don't completely understand how to do the problem, this gives me step-by-step instructions for all the odd problems.

Don't waste your money on renting this book

I rented this for a required class to try to save money only to find out that pages are missing in this book. I looked at my course syllabus and discovered that the pages for the required labs are missing from this book. Don't waste your money on renting this book.

Joan Salge Blake (MS, RD, LDN) is a clinical assistant professor and dietetics internship director at Boston University's Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. She is a member of the American Dietetic association and the Massachusetts Dietetic Association (MDA), has been a presenter and presiding officer at both the ADA Annual Meeting and the MDA Annual Convention, and has been named MDA's "Young Dietitian of the Year." She is a recipient of the Whitney Powers Excellence in Teaching Award from Boston University. In addition to teaching and writing, Joan has a private practice specializing in weight management and lifestyle. She is a member of the ABC News Medical Expert Network and a contributor of articles to a variety of magazines.

The book has been updated

Last year the USDA updated the food groups again. If you purchase the book new you will get an insert with the updated "myplate" info. The used book does not contain the updated information so I'm having to go online to get the information I need for class. It is worth the savings to buy it used and go online for the myplate stuff I need for class.

well written with good visuals

I bought this book for a course and it is very well written. This is a massive amount of information but the book walks through each section nicely. There are numerous visuals to go with each group of information. I think some of the anatomy ones could be better, bigger and clearer but for the most part these are very well done.

Do not order this book new.

I typically try to be cordial on reviews. When I see phrases in all caps, I imagine some delirious person who more than likely did not read the instructions. Well, I must admit, I read the directions and took a calculated risk. It did not work in my favor, however. I have purchased books on Amazon for 5 semesters now. I have yet to have any issue with it, until this book. I will say that once again, Amazon gets 5 stars for their customer service and attempting to help me, but this product is not worth the purchase.

The single most important thing in text books today: the online access code. Without this, many text books are no better than weights in your already strained backpack. I purchased this because so many people said it worked for them while only a couple it did not. I, again, took a chance hoping this would work out for me. However, the code did not work. Amazon sent me another book/code, but honestly, I simply sent it back because it was in the same exact packaging. The ISBN on the shrink wrap of the book is different than the ISBN of the book itself. Utilizing the campus bookstore online, I double checked that, in fact, I ordered the correct ISBN, but for what ever reason, (neither Pearson or Amazon could explain) the access code did not work. I presume it has something to do with the ISBN's being different. Why it would work for some and not others is a mystery.

I ended up spending another $42 for the online access and $16 for the MyDietAnalysis access. If I say anything in caps, it is this: RENT OR BUY THIS BOOK USED. Then pay for whatever online access your professor requires. I fortunately had money in the bank to just say screw it and make the purchase, but if you're a starving college student, do not buy it new. Avoid the headaches, the phone calls, the frustration at the beginning of an already stressful week to your semester, and heed these words.

That being said, I can't wait to learn more about this subject, however, now that I'm all stressed out, I realized I just burned through a whole bag of tortilla chips....

The book arrived a couple days late. Which meant I started class without the book. The condition of the packaging and the text book was very good. It would have been helpful to know the book did not included the code for the online portion of the book and I had to purchase it separately. Having the information before hand would have affected my discussion to purchase the used book as opposed to a new one.

A wonderfully helpful and clear book, even for designers, just like all Robin Williams' and John Tollett's books; and like those other books, a delight to read, as well. Even though I was familiar with Photoshop beforehand, I learned a lot and picked up some great tips. Highly recommended!

The book is easy to understand for beginners

I purchased "The Non-Designer's InDesign Book" from this author first (a few years ago) and used it in an introductory InDesign class I taught. The book is easy to understand for beginners, and even had a few tips that, as a professional, *I'd* forgotten about! I was heart-broken to hear the InDesign book is no longer in print, so thought it smart to purchase the Photoshop and Illustrator book by the same author.

About the Author

Kirk Trigsted teaches mathematics at the University of Idaho and has been director of the Polya Mathematics Center since its inception in 2001. Kirk has taught with MyMathLab for many years, and has contributed to the videos for several Pearson books. Kirk is also actively involved with the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT).

Kevin Bodden is a professor of mathematics at Lewis & Clark Community College where he has taught since 1999. He holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and a master’s degree in engineering from Purdue University. He has authored or co-authored ancillary material for numerous textbooks ranging from basic college math to calculus and statistics. He has contributed videos for several of these textbooks and has authored math content on grant projects for the Illinois Community College Board. Kevin is married with three children and is actively involved in their school and extracurricular activities. In his spare time, he enjoys soccer, camping, and geocaching.

Randy Gallaher is a professor of mathematics at Lewis & Clark Community College, where he has taught since 1997. Prior to this position, Randy taught high school and middle school mathematics for five years in Missouri. He holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Southeast Missouri State University and has completed additional graduate coursework at both Missouri State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has coauthored ancillary materials for numerous math and statistics textbooks and has worked as a math author on several grant projects for the Illinois Community College Board. Randy is married with three children and spends most evenings actively involved in their activities. In his limited free time, he loves to fish the small rivers and streams of southern Missouri.

About the Author

Mark Dugopolski was born in Menominee, Michigan. After receiving a BS from Michigan State University, he taught high school in Illinois for four years. He received an MS in mathematics from Northern Illinois University at DeKalb. He then received a PhD in the area of topology and an MS in statistics from the University of Illinois at Champaign—Urbana. Mark taught mathematics at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond for twenty-five years and now holds the rank of Professor Emeritus of Mathematics. He has been writing textbooks since 1988. He is married and has two daughters. In his spare time he enjoys tennis, jogging, bicycling, fishing, kayaking, gardening, bridge, and motorcycling.

Current Student user. Unhappy!

I'm a college student currently using this textbook. I'm great at Math, straight As, and this text book is very poorly written, confusing, and the examples do not go into detail. They skip steps and I am very disappointed that I have to use this book the entire semester. IF ANY COLLEGE ADMINISTRATORS ARE READING THIS, PLEASE CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TEXTBOOK FOR YOUR COLLEGE.

Terrible...of course it is required

I have a degree in Computer Info Systems and I wanted to go back and get my Masters in Comp Sci...sooooo... here I am.
Is it the teacher, or the book, or both? The teacher has assigned problems from the book in advance. You go home and you have the problem, and the answers for the odd numbers in the back, and no idea how to do 85% of the assigned problems because there is no example anywhere to be found. I'm not sure how learning is supposed to occur during this process?
The sections in this book before the problems do a few basic examples, then they have dozens of problems far FAR more advance and cryptic. Which leave the student baffled as to how they got the answer. No learning. I've had college algebra before, but this is by far the most difficult book I've ever seen on the subject. It would take me about a month working every night to cover 1 chapter, and we cover 1 chapter a week in the class.
I am reading a Calculus book that is far easier to understand than this.
This book should be renamed to: Algebra for the expert mathematician professional.

The pages rip very easily also.

Lousy Math Textbook

I am taking college algebra now, and we're using this book. The problem I think most people are finding is that this book was written for traditional college students who had algebra 1&2 in high school and basically have no other time constraints, ie., a family, job etc. If you've been out of school for 10+ years it's going to be a struggle because the author assumes that he is just adding a little bit more knowledge to what you already know and have been doing for the last 2-3 years. If you are a non-traditional student I suggest that you also buy the solution manual and the DVD for this book, and then block off the adequate time required for you to succeed, otherwise forget it.

Now specifics about this book. It skips too many steps in the examples, therefore students can't go back to the particular section and see how a problem is solved. Also the even numbered problems often don't have their similar match amongst the odd numbered problems. So again you have no "blueprint" to use in solving that problem. Those two things are enough to give this book a 1-star rating even with the explanation I gave about non-traditional vs. traditional students.

About the Author
Dr. Gary Rockswold has taught mathematics for 25 years at all levels from seventh grade to graduate school, including junior high and high school students, talented youth, vocational, undergraduate and graduate students, and adult education classes. He graduated with majors in mathematics and physics from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Iowa State University. He has an interdisciplinary background and has also taught physical science, astronomy, and computer science. Outside of mathematics, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.

I am so glad to have this highly informative and useful resource for my final semester in an RN program. I particularly like the listings of diagnostic tests, their definition and purpose. A very logical and readable reference.

A Nusing CAre and Nursing Plan this is a MUST!!!

I just got this book I had the previous book as well and when Pam came out with this book I had to get to update the prior. This book is excellent!! First I have to tell you a difficult book to find in the book stores so if you have an opportunity to get than do so. The books is as you know med-surg based it has what the disease is, s/s that it presents s/s of what the pt may have, diagnostics with the steps on what a nurse would do, labs on what they would be with this pathology, collab mgt, nursing dx, and expected outcomes, pt teaching, everything in a small compact book. I carry this book with me on the floor, it has all the disorders that are so prevalent in the hospital and what to do as a nurse, pain management and also those with special needs. Nursing student you would be THANKFUL for having this tool, it especially when your med-surg book is so wordy and unclear, Nursing Dx right at your finger tips. This is an investment that you will have throughout school and right on the floor [adults unless a child present with this] ICU,CCU,Med-surg unit
