About the Author
Cedric Mims began as a zoologist, studying under GP Wells and JBS Haldane atUniversity College, London. He then went to the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London, graduating in 1952. After hospital appointments he spent threeyears in Uganda investigating tropical fevers, and then 16 years in Canberra, Australia, interspersed with two years in the USA. This was followed by a 20 year period in London as Professor of Microbiology at Guys Hospital MedicalSchool, where his enthusiasm for teaching found its outlet.

His career has focussed on virology, infectious diseases and immunology, and he has produced five books and more than a hundred scientific papers on thesesubjects. Pathogenesis has been his constant research interest, covering a broad range, from warts and scrapie to LCM and herpes viruses. He is always astounded at ordinary people's ignorance of what goes on inside their bodies when a microbiological invader gets to work, and in 2000 he published "The War Within Us; Everyman's Guide to Infection and Immunity".

finally bugs make sense

I read another book that was based on classifications of bugs, studied it diligently for a year in med school before finding this text, which is human system based. Love it.

If you think of things in terms of big picture and clinical presentation, this book may be a very big help. And it's super well written. Kind of fun, even late at night.

Not everyone learns the same way. On the spectrum, i was a philosophy/lit major fyi.

A Necessary Resource for any Microbiologist

Medical Microbiology would be an excellent reference book for any microbiologist. It contains general information about any bacterium you can imagine as well as overviews of the diseases various bacteria cause. Symptoms, complications, diagnosis, and treatment options are covered in detail. The book also contains wonderfully vivid pictorial accounts of the bacteria and their various modes of pathogenicity. A fascinating, well-organized text of sophisticated microbiology!

Wise Choice for Learning Infectious Diseases

This text book is outstanding in terms of clear pictures and detailed descriptions. It exhibits numerous color photos which help remember the clinical signs and appearances of common infectious diseases. On the other hand, the text excellently outlines and explains the underlying theory and treatments. This book takes a modern approach to teach Microbiology by introducing the contents in a system based mannar. This is very different from the traditional way of teaching the subject in which the materials are delivered species by species. I think this way is more clinically relevant and thus, suits the needs of health care students.

It's a good place to start, but don't expect too much.

It's really nice to have Adobe do something that isn't just the Classroom in a Book, but rather on DVD in videos. The interface is easy to navigate, but as usual, it's just the skimming of the surface kind of information. Do they go over every tool in the toolbox? Not even close. My students are so smart, they want to know how to use the gradient mesh by week two. Do they cover that here on the DVD? Nope. They talk about colors generally, but do they cover the eyedropper and how to use it with the gradient mesh? No. Is this the most powerful way to create seamless amazing vector art? Yes. There are some marvelous tutorials on youtube that I refer my students to. Illustrator is such a wonderful application, but there are so many things they need to update. CS6 has some good changes and some not so nice ones. Please Adobe, listen to your users. We've got lots of ideas for improvement. This is a good DVD, but just not as much covered as I'd like to see.

Tons of information and it's easy to understand. Using it in a class right now and I think it is the best text book that I have ever had. Everything is broken down into paragraph long sections so it doesn't overwhelm you with tons of information. It is short and too the point.

Great study help!

This DVD includes step by step instructions on how all health assesment procedures are done. The book does a good job of explaining but the DVD brings it to life. It helped me do really well on the tests since I could visualize how everything was supposed to happen. I definetely recommend this for anyone that has to take Health Assesment!

About the Author

John Squires has been teaching math for over 20 years. He was the architect of the nationally acclaimed “Do the Math” program at Cleveland State Community College and is now head of the math department at Chattanooga State Community College, where he is implementing course redesign throughout the department. John is the 2010 Cross Scholar for the League for Innovation and the author of the 13th Cross Paper which focuses on course redesign. As a redesign scholar for The National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT), John speaks frequently on course redesign and has worked with both colleges and high schools on using technology to improve student learning.

Karen Wyrick is the current chair of the math department at Cleveland State Community College and has been teaching math there for over 18 years. She is an outstanding instructor, as students have selected her as the college’s best instructor more than once, and she was recently awarded a 2011 AMATYC Teaching Excellence Award. Karen played an integral role in Cleveland State’s Bellwether Award-winning “Do the Math” redesign project, and she speaks frequently on course redesign at colleges throughout the nation and also serves as a redesign scholar for The National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT).

Bought the new and old version (I used older version, husband needed newer version per our instructor, since he was in a different year than me) Anyway, great book to study for boards, I passed both CRT and RRT first try. Goes over everything. Has nice hints/tips to pass the test in boxes throughout the book. HIGHLY recommend. Also has good practice questions for multiple choice and sims type questions...

About the Author

Peter Read Miller has been photographing athletes, events, and the sporting life for more than 35 years. As a staff photographer for Sports Illustrated for more than 30 years, he has shot more than 100 SI covers. He has covered 9 Olympic games, 36 Super Bowls, 14 NBA finals, as well as Stanley Cup finals, the World Series, the Kentucky Derby, the NCAA Basketball Final Four, and the World Cup soccer finals. His images have appeared in Time Magazine, LIFE Magazine, Playboy Magazine, Newsweek, and The New York Times. A Canon Explorer of Light, he teaches yearly sports photography workshops in Denver and Atlanta, and he is an active speaker at events such as Imaging USA and PhotoPlus. Great book for Sports photographers

This book is full of great content for all levels of sports photographers. Peter is one of the best football photographers and his knowledge of how to shoot the game is incredible. The book details his thoughts on what you should look for and where the best shots come from during a game. With his experience he has examples of why some methods are better then others. He details gear and tips on what you should bring for ames at all levels. The book details football, olympics and his sports portraits. The Sports Portraits section is insightful and be explains his process and what he is trying to get out of the photos. The photography throughout the book is great and supports the text with examples and detailed information on what his settings were. Great book for anyone interested in getting better at sports photography.

Recommended even if you never photograph Football or the Olympics

I hesitated in my decision to buy this book (but I'm glad I did, read on...). Shooting football and the Olympics are not (to put it mildly) something I do regularly. I am also not a sports fan of the type that might have purchased this book because of my interest in team sports or the Olympics etc. I do shoot portraits but only about 43 of the 260+ pages of this book are specifically devoted to that. They're not a bad 43 pages but if all you are interested in is learning more about portrait photography then this is probably not the book for you. I was hoping when I purchased this book that some of the insights Peter would share about his approach to sports photography would be ones I might use in other types of photography (i.e. photographing other sports or events etc). In the end I am very happy that I decided to buy this book.

Peter shares with us, in an in-depth manner and and with great photos to illustrate his points, his approach to shooting sports (particularly football). Even if you have no expectation of shooting NFL football, his discussion both from a technical and esthetic point of view as to why he does what he does the way he does it is educational.

While this book would be GREAT for someone who specifically was interested in shooting football and certain other sports, it is also educational for photographers interested in how very accomplished photographers do what they do and why they do it that way. It is also be highly recommended for those interested in the profession of sports photography.

I don't know what Peter charges when he formally teaches about sports photography but this book must be a huge bargain compared to that. Unlike certain other photographic technique books, I really feel that I got my money's worth educationally in learning about this subject from this book.

Highly recommended for sports (football in particular!) photographers in general as well as photographer who recognize that learning about a different specially of photography might have lessons for their own genre of photography. Admittedly, if all you shoot are still lifes in a studio then chances are that this book is NOT for you.

I finished the book in two sittings (not my style...I rarely finish a book). It was a marvelously fun read. The book was both mentally and visually stimulating, full of photographic advice, real life stories via a career timeline, beautiful photographs, and punctuated with humor. Mr. Miller prefaces his book by saying he didn't want it to be a "coffee table" book of photographs or a technical instruction manual. What he did was perfectly blend all of the above into an informative and enjoyable read. Mr. Miller (over 100 Sports Illustrated covers) has been credited with some of the most iconic sports images and moments ever captured. When the "coffee table" version finally does come out, I'll be the first in line. The photographs throughout the book deserve more than a cursory glance as you turn the pages. Some I simply stared at for a couple of minutes. The humor was unexpected as I found myself giggling (with a few outbursts of laughter) at some of his sidebar comments (page 200..."women runners (all of whom happen to be blonde) take a tumble during the 800M at the 2008 Prefontaine")

Whatever your photographic experience (or not), whether you even like sports, this book is enjoyable for everyone. It held my interest from cover to cover...and that's not easy.
