If you're a digital photographer, but haven't yet embraced Lightroom, my book quickly gets you up to speed on using the program. As a photographer, I use Lightroom 3 every day, so I show you its essential tricks and traps. Tips and more info can be found at the book's companion blog. Greatly expanded from the previous edition, the new book also clearly explains how to get the most Lightroom 3's core features and its cool new tools.
 
Superb noise control: The new processing engine does a superb job at controlling the digital noise that can mar low-light images. Luminance and color noise reduction are now as good as, or better than, the major third-party plug-ins. The most jaw-dropping results come when you combine Lightroom 3 with images taken with a newer camera that handles ISOs of 3,200 or higher. But even shooters with more ordinary cameras will benefit when capturing images in dim settings.
 
Automatic Lens Correction: Lightroom 3 can automatically correct a lens's inevitable distortions and color shifts. In effect, it liberates photographers from what had been a lot of time spent adjusting and tweaking images.
 
Audio/Video integration: At last, Lightroom 3 treats video files as full-fledged citizens. In contrast to the old version, Lightroom 3 sees any video file on your memory card and automatically imports them. Or export to folders that you use to sync photos to your mobile phone, a screensaver program, or even Web-based storage sites such as Dropbox.
 
Imports Overall Much Better: For Lightroom 3, the import process has been redone from the ground up, thank goodness. It's now much more intuitive, and it's always clear what you're importing from where. You can save frequently used settings as an import preset. You also can use Loupe view to inspect photos before moving them off the storage card.
 
Other Develop Improvements: The Develop module has been smoothed and buffed from top to bottom. Collections now appear right in the Develop module, eliminating the constant switching to the Library. The Adjustment Brush can now apply "negative sharpening," which you can use to creatively blur parts of a photo.
 
Printing: Creating custom photo packages has become as simple as grabbing and rearranging photos on a layout. There's also a rotate-to-fit option to help you build paper-saving layouts. Maximum print resolution has been boosted to 720 pixels per inch from the previous limit of 480 ppi.

Many typos and inconsistencies in answers

This book has a useful format, but it is riddled with typos and inconsistency between the instructions and the answers given. The errors are so many that it interferes with a beginner's ability to learn. I know all books have a few wrong answers in the back, but this numbers in the 10-20 per chapter range, sometimes more. I hope they reedit it, because I did like the design. If they do, they should expand the conversions section to include more household and apothecary problems. The CD is just a condensed version of the book, no new problems to work on.

Good book. Kinda basic but does the trick. Apparently there are some misprints in here so be careful. Had a great teacher that pointed them out before we got confused. If you buy it I wonder if your professor will catch it.

Bad Turned Good

This was a brand new book. I received it in a reasonable time but this book was a mess. The corners were all bent, there were pages crinkled, and about 20 pages in the back were torn halfway up off the binding. I did return it and I got a new one very fast without any charge. I was very pleased with the whole return process, and customer service couldn't have been nicer.

Too simplistic

A good book if you've just bought your 5D Mark III and know very little about DSLRs in general.
However if you've owned the camera for 2 months and have read the manual (well, a lot of it) and you are hoping for new insights you'll be sorely disappointed.
Otherwise the book is attractive and reasonably well written.
The sort of person who buys a $3500 dollar camera might be assumed to make the effort to read the manual in which case there are probably better books to be had.

Read this review before buying! Not a good book!

This book is a waste of time for a professional photographer. It explains how to use manual, composition, and aperture. It doesn't include how to use the focus points or even focus on some of the features specific to the 5D Mark iii. It only uses the 5DMarkiii name in the title to sell more copies. It really should be called 'Digital photography for beginners'. I almost ordered this, but flipped through it in a book store before hand. So glad I did. It is not a 'how to better use the 5D Mark iii' book you are looking for here. It is an insult to any professional photographer, since anyone who owns a Canon 5d Mark iii should be able to compose a picture well, much less use the manual mode. It would be good for someone starting out in photography, but not a professional.

I purchased the DVD with the idea that it would help me use and understand the canon 5Diii. What I receive was a DVD that was more geared toward photography with any camera. Very disappointing.

About the Author

Kirk Trigsted teaches mathematics at the University of Idaho and has been director of the Polya Mathematics Center since its inception in 2001. Kirk has taught with MyMathLab for many years, and has contributed to the videos for several Pearson books. Kirk is also actively involved with the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT).

 

Randy Gallaher is a professor of mathematics at Lewis & Clark Community College, where he has taught since 1997. Prior to this position, Randy taught high school and middle school mathematics for five years in Missouri. He holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Southeast Missouri State University and has completed additional graduate coursework at both Missouri State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has coauthored ancillary materials for numerous math and statistics textbooks and has worked as a math author on several grant projects for the Illinois Community College Board. Randy is married with three children and spends most evenings actively involved in their activities. In his limited free time, he loves to fish the small rivers and streams of southern Missouri.

 

Kevin Bodden is a professor of mathematics at Lewis & Clark Community College where he has taught since 1999. He holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and a master’s degree in engineering from Purdue University. He has authored or co-authored ancillary material for numerous textbooks ranging from basic college math to calculus and statistics. He has contributed videos for several of these textbooks and has authored math content on grant projects for the Illinois Community College Board. Kevin is married with three children and is actively involved in their school and extracurricular activities. In his spare time, he enjoys soccer, camping, and geocaching.

About the Author
Judith Goodenough Judith received her B.S. in biology from Wagner College (Staten Island, NY) and her doctorate in biology from New York University. She has more than 35 years of teaching experience at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, until recently specializing in introductory level courses. In 2009, she was selected as a College of Natural Sciences Fellow for Blended Learning and developed a hybrid course in introductory physiology. The insights into student concerns and problems-gained from more than 30 years of teaching Human Biology and 20 years of team-teaching the Biology of Social Issues-have helped shape this book. In 1986, Judith was honored with a Distinguished Teaching Award from UMass. In addition to teaching, she has written articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributed chapters to several introductory biology texts, and written numerous laboratory manuals. With the author team of McGuire and Jakob, she wrote Perspectives on Animal Behavior, Third Edition. Betty McGuire Betty received her B.S. in biology from Pennsylvania State University, where she also played varsity basketball. She went on to receive an M.S. and Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and then spent 2 happy years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Her field and laboratory research emphasize the social behavior and reproduction of small mammals. She has published more than 50 research papers, coauthored the text Perspectives on Animal Behavior as well as several introductory biology study guides and instructor manuals, and served as an associate editor for Mammalian Species, a publication of the American Society of Mammalogists. Betty taught Human Biology, Introductory Biology, Vertebrate Biology, and Animal Behavior at Smith College. She now teaches Mammalogy and Vertebrates: Structure, Function, and Evolution at Cornell University.

Not used all that often at work but I figure its a nice addition to my standard drug guide. Same setup as Mosby's regular drug guide, which is convenient. I like how it contains references should one wish to further research various herbs as they have not been tested as extensively as their pharmaceutical counterparts. More for personal education and niftiness that utility, but nice all the same.

Normal 0 false false false John Hornsby: When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics, education, or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, all three of his goals have been realized; his love for teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Marge Lial (late) was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, was most recently affiliated with American River College. An avid reader and traveler, her travel experiences often found their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She was particularly interested in archeology, and trips to various digs and ruin sites produced fascinating problems for her textbooks, involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan. Gary Rockswold has been teaching mathematics for 33 years at all levels from seventh grade to graduate school, including junior high and high school students, talented youth, vocational, undergraduate, and graduate students, and adult education classes. Now retired, he most recently served as professor of mathematics at Minnesota State University-Mankato. He graduated with majors in mathematics and physics from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Iowa State University. He has an interdisciplinary background and has also taught physical science, astronomy, and computer science. Outside of mathematics, he enjoys spending time with his lovely wife and two children.
