About the Author
Marvin Bittinger For over thirty-eight years, Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters. David Ellenbogen David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for twenty-two years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has also taught at St. Michael's College and The University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate, and has been a member ofthe Mathematical Association of America since 1979. He has authored dozens of publications on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures at numerous conferences on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his BA in mathematics from Bates College and his MA in community college mathematics education from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A co-founder of the Colchester Vermont Recycling Program, Professor Ellenbogen has a deep love for the environment and the outdoors, especially in his home state of Vermont. In his spare time, he enjoys playing keyboard in the band Soularium, volunteering as a community mentor, hiking, biking, and skiing. He has two sons, Monroe and Zack.

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she spends time traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp. Judy Penna received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Kansas State University and her graduate degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois. Since then, she has taught at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis and at Butler University, and continues to focus on writing quality textbooks for undergraduate mathematics students. immigrant medicine - especially the areas of communication and how to navigate cultural boundaries. The material covered goes from parasitic disorders through to psychiatric problems. The section on womens' reproductive health is very useful. This is an excellent book to have around to dip into for advice. I shall put my copy in our hospital library."

Travel Medicine encompasses a wide range of topics from the prevention of disease and health of international travellers to more exotics such as wilderness medicine, altitude medicine, aviation and space medicine. This is reflected in this timely, elegant, informative and comprehensive volume on immigrant medicine. No topic seems to have escaped the net. The text is well-illustrated, usually in colour, with clear and comprehensive charts and tables. This is a gem of a book, which is strongly recommended as essential reading for all physicians, laboratory and public health workers.

Does a good job with an impossible task

Most of this book is a practical review of a lot of conditions that those of us who went to medical school years ago had to learn, but mainly forgot if we were practicing exclusively in the first world. Things like schistosomiasis and neurocysticercosis. But, thanks to migrations of people and other circumstances, it may turn out that we have to relearn them. There are also good chapters on more common diseases, like tuberculosis and hepatitis B. There are chapters dealing with the distribution of various diseases, which can help you sort out what to look for in a particular patient, and chapters on special classes of immigrant patients, such as survivors of torture and interpersonal violence. The book takes an explicit moral stance: that many immigrants have gone through great hardship before reaching countries of refuge, and that they deserve compassionate treatment. For a textbook, it's decently written and edited, and presented in a nice format. Of course, to describe all the medical problems that could be encountered in, basically, the entire world except for the most developed nations, is impossible, but this book does a good job of reducing the task to something that's useable. I'd recommend it for anyone practicing in a setting where they see a significant number of patients who have arrived from less economically developed countries or regions of war.

About the Author

Elayn Martin-Gay has taught mathematics at the University of New Orleans for more than 25 years. Her numerous teaching awards include the local University Alumni Association’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Outstanding Developmental Educator at University of New Orleans, presented by the Louisiana Association of Developmental Educators.

Prior to writing textbooks, Elayn Martin-Gay developed an acclaimed series of lecture videos to support developmental mathematics students. These highly successful videos originally served as the foundation materials for her texts. Today, the videos are specific to each book in her series. She has also created Chapter Test Prep Videos to help students during their most “teachable moment”–as they prepare for a test–along with Instructor-to-Instructor videos that provide teaching tips, hints, and suggestions for every developmental mathematics course, including basic mathematics, prealgebra, beginning algebra, and intermediate algebra.

Elayn is the author of 12 published textbooks and numerous multimedia interactive products, all specializing in developmental mathematics courses. She has participated as an author across a broad range of educational materials: textbooks, videos, tutorial software, and courseware. Wonderful book for all learning styles!

This book breaks down the basics in a great step-by-step approach; allowing the student to gain a solid foundation of concepts and methods. It explains concepts so clearly, that if you miss a lecture, you will be able to study from this book and fully grasp the material you missed. This is coming from someone who 1) has notoriously struggled with math, and 2) does not generally learn well from reading (I'm more of a multi-media and lecture learning style). These things being stated, this book gets an A+!

About the Author
Craig Larman is the co-creator of LeSS, and since 2005 has worked with clients (such as UBS, bwin.party, and Nokia Networks) to apply the LeSS framework to large product groups. A Must read for your leadership before your attempt to transition to Scrum/Agile

Just received the new book and browsing through it the topics resonate with my core agile bones. So much of what is written and explained within this book is what I would want all levels of an organization to deeply understand when they are embarking on an agile transition. When I reflect upon the successful transitions I've been a part of I see these patterns and behaviors detailed in the pages of this resource to be the keys to the transition. Also the failures I've experienced seem to be the organizations that couldn't wrap their minds around the basics that are very well described and detailed in the wonderful book.

Catapult your thinking of scaling to the next level

I have read Craig and Bas's "Practices scaling and lean" book before and It pretty much changed the way I think about scaling software deliveries. I was waiting for this 3rd book to be released and this book catapults ones thinking to the next level. The beauty with Craig and Bas's books are its depth and their ability to explain the deeper concepts of systems thinking, lean and advanced principles in a common language.

There were several takeaways from this book:
1. In the whole process of learning LeSS, one could get a better understanding of Scrum and appreciate the importance of scaling Scrum

2. It becomes quite evident that, a proper "Product" definition is critical for the companies to succeed in scaling

3. Even though the earlier books had covered the comparison between Feature and component teams, the story with examples enhances the understanding

4. Scaling should not be at the cost of agility and the importance of org structure has been made crystal clear in this book

Have you already read the earlier two books from Craig and Bas Scaling Lean & Agile Development: Thinking and Organizational Tools for Large-Scale Scrum and Practices for Scaling Lean & Agile Development: Large, Multisite, and Offshore Product Development with Large-Scale Scrum? If not, do not worry, this is the book that you should start with. The book promises condensed introduction to LeSS and 100 Guides showing how it can work.

The book starts with opening chapters where reader new to LeSS will get a short overview of LeSS. If you are familiar with LeSS, and it’s history you can skip these sections and move to more interesting parts of the book. Rest of the book consist of guides that are meant to help people kick-starting their LeSS adoption.

The first chapter after the introduction part naturally handles LeSS adoption and what organizational impacts you can expect when moving to a customer-centric organization. Next, the book drills into the management role and how it is changing when moving to a more Agile organization. I enjoyed reading these chapters and found them precious since these are topics that are rarely handled in Agile literature.

Then comes the Scrum Master role and how it changes when working in large organizations. Then we move to an exciting topic of defining the product in LeSS and how having properly defined product is easing the management of large-scale Agile development.

Even if you are not planning to use LeSS framework, I highly recommend reading chapters from adoption until product there you get insight on creating a truly agile organization that also works on large-scale.

Then we move to product owner role and product backlog and using them to manage large development with just one real product owner. Rest of the book consists of detailed guides of the Large-Scale Scrum events and focusing on the impact that you can see when working with many teams. The interesting chapter at the end is called coordination and integration where the authors describe ways of achieving coordination without professional coordinator role.

What you should expect from the book is a concise description of starting LeSS adoption and getting continuous experimentation with inspect and adapt loop going. And it delivers this excellently that's why I gave 5 stars to this book.

I hate college book suppliers

Over $100 for a book that is not bound and has to be in a three ring binder. For that price they really ought to include the binder and I don't even want to think about the low ball price I'll get when I try to sell/trade it in at the end of the semester.

Calvanize

The book includes a DVD ROM with basic tutorials from Calvin himself. Made by Video2brain the DVD is easy to navigate and the tutorials themselves are easy to follow. If you like Calvin's work then you will appreciate the liberal way in which he shares his knowledge.

The book itself is a collection of his work in different categories (conceptual, emotion and so on). Calvin explains at the beginning of the book that when he first became interested in Photoshop art he would study the artists he admired and attempt to replicate their work. You could say his book works in the same way.

If you like his work then naturally you will want to try his techniques for yourself, and because the DVD is included it makes it all the more accessible to do so. That's why I purchased the book/DVD, and I am glad I did.

Great stuff! Techniques you won't find anywhere else.

I've been admiring Calvin Hollywood's look ever since he did a guest spot on Scott Kelby's Photoshop Insider blog. You can find his tutorial there titled "Freaky Details," to get a taste of what it's like. Note: This material is not for raw beginners. You don't need to know much, but you should have at least a rudimentary knowledge of Photoshop or Elements.

He shows you here how to get the super popular high contrasty fashiion look, which is how he's known, but these tutorials go way beyond that. I purchased the videos directly from his website and was at first impatient, because he walks you through some basic techniques that everyone knows, like levels and masks. But -- this is levels, masks, blend modes etc like you've never thought of them before. He opens your eyes to the hidden power in the everyday techniques that Photoshop users go through daily, and then you say, "Aha! I didn't know you could do that. And that gives me an idea for..." and so on. He quickly expands your skills and at the same time your creativity, because you'll quickly come up with ideas on how to put these techniques to use on your own images.

For example, I have a shot of a girl standing next to a motorcycle, illuminated with a single speedlight. Nice pose, nice image, but that's all. It's kind of flat, and could be any bike on the street, a snapshot look to it. I applied Calvin's "Freaky Details" techinques, and Wow! The spokes on the bike sparkle like diamonds, the fenders look newly painted, the chrome fittings dazzle, and she looks great too. Friends are amazed, and I show them how easy it was.

But that's just the showy part of it. By the time you finish all the tutorials you'll have gained a considerable mastery of Photoshop, which will apply to your most sublte images as well as the dramatic ones. These are superb lessons. And Calvin's teaching style is very animated and enthusiastic, with a touch of humor here and there. It's very easy listening.

You won't learn this stuff anywhere else. And it transforms your thinking. When you see a killer image in a magazine or on the web, you'll no longer wonder how in the world they did that. You'll say "I know how I could get that look." Then you'll get even more ideas of your own, and so on.

This is unique and valuable material, presented in an engaging way. For those of you who want to do more, or much more, than simple snapshots, this book is a pot of gold. Highly recommended.

TOTAL WASTE OF GOOD MONEY
i bought this thinking the whole book would be about SIGNATURE TECHNIQUES IN PHOTOSHOP BY CALVIN HOLLYWOOD.
Instead the entire book is just a photo book of some of his work, much of it not even close to his best work. There is no context or info on the creation of single one of these images. Just lame paragraphs written for kids who might watch Barney.
Then a DVD at the back of the book. OH! This must be the blitzkrieg of info that I paid for! Instead it's a series of videos, very loosely explained without technical context, in broken English (I can't speak anything but English so kudos to Calvin, but if i were creating something for mass audience I'd have a ghost writer to make sure I get full information clearly across). The video tutorials are a little confusing because of the lack of good writing and blowing by the reasons behind use of certain filters. A brief mention is made between the diff between surface blur and smart blur but it's in no way complete and anyone buying this book would already know the difference. THen today I go searching for some youtube tutorials and what do i find? The very tutorials I paid good money for in this book by Calvin Hollywood, for other blogs. He probably got paid for that too. I'm just saying if you promise to deliver something, really do it. If you're selling a book of random photos, give us the technical story behind it. Only people who want to know are going to buy this book.

WORST RENAL PHYSIOLOGY BOOK I HAVE EVER READ

Worst renal physio book i ever read. FULL OF ERRORS that are essential to understanding physio. Whoever gave the book 5 stars is smoking crack/ isn't a med student/ or most likely is one of the authors/ a fake reviewer.

DO NOT bUY THIS BOOK!!!!! I thought it would be okay and i would pick up on the errors but they are seriously terrible

Good Physiology

Book does a good job in explaining the main physiological points. Structure of book is around different functions (NaCl Transport) rather than speaking to specific renal structures and describing those functions. Does not have a good description of renal structure, but definitely enough to understand the physiology.

This is a MUST GET for 1st or 2nd year medical students! Keoppen was one of my professors and is an EXCELLENT clinician and instructor! This book is an excellent resource for students and those with special interest in nephrology. The end of chapter quizzes and practice exams are essential for test preparation!

Is it the last version of this book? It's quite saddness. I have the old version. It is much more brilliant of the latest version.

Full color but not advanced

Has enough detail for most general dentists when you need a reference, and more than enough for the dental student. There is also some discussion of advanced technique in the text that is shown with a colored background, however there does not seem to be much discussion on advanced cases (4 stars). Chapters discuss all aspects of most partial denture cases including some maxillofacial prosthetics. I like to learn a lot by looking at pictures. One huge plus this book has is more than 90% full color (5 stars) pictures (more than 900). However I wish the pictures showed how to do procedures in a step by step format. The pictures for the most part just show what things are supposed to look like in the end of a procedure (3 stars). Avg stars: 4
