Very Good Introduction to Lightroom 4

Mikkel Aaland has created a very good introduction to, and overview of, the Adobe Lightroom 4 software. Each Chapter, consisting of multiple sub-chapters, explores aspect of the Lightroom 4 "Modules" - those portions of the Lightroom program that enable the cataloguing, processing or outputting of RAW format photographs.

The sub-chapters within each Chapter typically run in length from 4 minutes to 10 minutes a piece - each presenting an area in an easily digestible, focused manner. Each sub-chapter is also short enough to repeat immediately in the event that you want to reinforce what you just saw. Each is also sufficiently self-contained that you can review it weeks or months later without having to view the entire chapter in which the sub-chapter appears.

Aaland has a pleasant teaching style, voice and manner. He is clear and readily comprehensible. The DVD will leave you with a very good understanding of the overall operation of the program and how to use each of its modules. There is no surplus or filler in this instructional DVD - it is all useful information which is presented directly and succinctly.

It serves to note that the instructional style is a bit informal, however, a point for which I have seen Aaland criticized in reviews of his Photoshop program. For example, sometimes he dials in too much of a control and then has to back it out. While I understand the criticism, this "informality" did not bother me. It actually made the video easier to watch as it seemed more natural - as if I was sitting there with him rather than watching a more polished, but perhaps more sterile, presentation.

This is an introductory DVD, however, and not one which provides in-depth instruction in all regards. Although Aaland covers the entire program with 9 hours of instruction, there are areas in which I would like to have seen more content. For example, a few of the chapters on the Develop Module - the module which contains, in a sense, the "guts" of the Lightroom software where photographs are processed - could be longer and could provide greater instruction on each of the tools/sliders used to edit and process the photograph.

Aaland certainly covers the function and use of each slider, but not extensively and he does not explore all the elements that underlie its utility in the editing process. For example, I would have liked lengthier discussions on the tone curve, lights, darks, highlights, shadows, sharpness, clarity, contrast and others - with a little more explanation of its use and the underlying importance of each in a photograph. Perhaps such is more appropriate to an instructional DVD that exclusively focuses on RAW editing (the Develop module), and not a DVD that attempts to cover the entire Lightroom program and its cataloguing, editing and outputting functionality, but I would have liked to have had just a bit more information in the Develop Module in any event.

For this, I would recommend George Jardine's excellent video Adobe Lightroom 5 Video Tutorials - The Develop Module which explores just the Develop module, but does so in depth. I would also recommend his video on the Library Module as well Adobe Lightroom 4 & 5 Video Tutorials - The Library Module (LR4-L1). They are both extremely well done. I would avoid Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4: The Fundamentals and Beyond (A Workshop on Video) which I found to be not very good (bland presentation, extraordinarily rushed pace, not in-depth enough in some regards).

Lastly, it is a small point which does not bear on the quality of the product, but which I will nevertheless mention - many of the photographs Aaland works with are really quite bland or even unpleasant to look at over the course of the sub-chapter on a topic. I thought it odd that a photographer would use lesser quality images in his presentation. It does not affect that quality of the instruction - it is just not as visually appealing as it could have been had he used some of his higher quality photographs.

In summary, I found this instructional DVD very informative and well done. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to learn how to begin using Lightroom 4.

Easy to use in small segments

really glad i purchased this. the video segments are short, maximum 10 minutes and effectively show all the functionality of LR4.. Combined with a beginner's reference like Scott Kelby's LR4 book or the more thorough English's LR 4 book, this makes for a great learning combination.

Adobe LR4 made easy

Mikkel makes a rather complicated product easy to understand. I wouldn't recomment it to a novice but if you've been around post processing software for a while you will love his way of teaching. Very down to earth, he doesn't use a lot of techie talk. I would highly recommend it to a mid level phtotgrapher wanting to use LR4 but affraid it will be too difficult to master.

Telephone Health Assessment

I expected this book to provide an algorhythmic(step by step) approach.
Instead, it gives list of multiple questions for every problem. When you are doing triage, you don't have to ask numerous questions if the very first one indicates an emergency/urgency.
The title of the book does not specify whether it is written for nurses, medical students or residents.

Not For Photoshop Beginners

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (not to be confused with just "Adobe Photoshop") is a great piece of software that allows photographers not just to catalog their work, or turn it into all kinds of media, but to process their raw files to adjust color and tonality to make their photographs look like their vision. The interface is a lot easier to use then its big brother Photoshop but there are things that are harder to do in Lightroom, like make local adjustments to a part of the image, or that can't be done at all, like join images to make a panorama. That's why a lot of photographers use both pieces of software to process their images.

Scott Kelby's "Photoshop for Lightroom Users" looks just like the knowledge store to allow Lightroom users to learn how to use the senior software to do those things Lightroom can't do. The book starts with a very quick walk-through of Photoshop tools like selections, layers and cloning. There is a chapter on moving images back and forth between Lightroom and Photoshop and some of the Photoshop tools that are not available in Lightroom like panorama creation and high dynamic range processing. Additional chapters show how to retouch portraits, create composites, apply special effects and sharpen images. There is even a chapter explaining effects that you don't have to go into Photoshop to achieve.

Kelby's tutorials are masterful, taking you step by illustrated step to achieve a result, and there is even a website with the images used in the tutorials that can be downloaded to follow the tutorial on your own computer. I learned how to more effectively use a few tools that I thought I had mastered.

The big however is that the instructions are inadequate if you are a beginner who wants to learn how to use Photoshop. For example, when it comes to creating layers, selections, adjustment layers and masks that will allow the image globally processed in Lightroom to be locally adjusted, the material is condensed to just a few paragraphs and not all of the adjustment layers are even covered. Better for the photographer new to Photoshop to get a good Photoshop introductory text, and learn how to transfer images back and forth between Lightroom and Photoshop in a Lightroom text.

Rather than teaching the reader how to use Photoshop, Kelby ends up providing us with a series of tips on how to perform specific tasks, like straighten teeth in a portrait. Normally I dislike tip books, but the quality of the tutorials that explain these tips is so high that I found some that might help even a more experienced user. The problem is that there is not enough information here for the beginning or intermediate user to learn how to use Photoshop to improve Lightroom-processed images. If you are a Lightroom user looking to learn Photoshop, this is a bad place to start. A more experienced Photoshop user might benefit from going through the tutorials, to find out Kelby's suggested methods for accomplishing more complex tasks, and perhaps discover a few worthwhile tips, but he or she will have to wade through a lot of fundamental material, which, while not adequate as an introduction to Photoshop, will seem like old hat to that experienced user.

Just what I was waiting for....

As a long time purchaser Kelby products and follower of Scott, I have been hoping for just this book. For those of us who need to know "Just the Basics" this book hits the SPOT. I have suggested it to all of my photog friends who are afraid of Photoshop!

This book covers:

1. The basics "Tools" available in Photoshop and how they work. Specifically the tools that are important to Photographers. Including essential Keyboard Shortcuts, Navigation and other techniques.

2. How to do a "Round Trip" with your image file from Lightroom to Photoshop and back to Lightroom again. Which is very important for library and catalog management.

3. Making Pano's and HDR pictures as well as using Smart Objects.

4. Critical Basic "Re-Touching" techniques to clean up your pictures. Including Facial Symmetry, Eyebrow Control, Improving "Eyes", Skin softening and cleaning, Teeth whitening. All the most important pieces of "Airbrushing" a portrait.

5. Blending and Combining Images. Including adding a logo or putting a picture inside a picture.

6. Creating effects like Tilt Shift, High Contrast, Reflections, replacing Sky (Clouds), Typography Effects.

7. How to Sharpen images, the right way (we all need this!)

8. Other "Problem" areas we all need to know how to fix.

This is a purchase you will not regret and is a quick and easy FAST read. I burned through it quickly to see what it had to offer, and I Can't wait to dive into my library of images and apply these techniques. This is the book we have all be waiting for!

P.S. The kindle version is absolutely useable on a iPad or Kindle for the computer. I know some times that can be a problem!

Very deceptive

What the title does not tell you is that it is for Photoshop Creative Cloud. So if you have Photoshop CS6 you can't do all the tutorials.

Really useful, attractive, well-written book...but do get it in paperback

I'm writing this review because if you are anything like me, you're wondering if this book is worth buying. Well, I can say absolutely YES. I know something about writing because it's my trade, so I can say that I like this author's style very much and the design of the book is very attractive and easy to follow. I considered buying the Kindle/Nook version but I'm very glad I did not. The book is too big for that format (so it was downsized to fit) and it is so nicely illustrated that it would be a shame, I think, not to get the printed book.

So is this worth the $14 or so versus just using the small printed manual or even the very long user guide that is available as a PDF file? My answer is YES! Neither of those resources is as easy to follow and understand as this book is. You might also wonder if this book is useful for NEX-6 owners in particular or whether it is just a rehash of a generic photography guide that could apply to any photography guide book. My answer to that question is two-fold: yes, it is directly squarely at the NEX-6 owner (so that all the features described are exactly those on this model camera) and yet it also has tons of general photography tips and explanations of terminology and technique. Also, it is illustrated with many great shhots taken by the author of his childhood home in Texas (and others from his travels). Each of these photos shows the lens, ISO, shutter, and f-stop settings used. I found this one feature to be very educational and helpful. This one little book has helped me to appreciate--and use--the NEX-6's many capabilities because each chapter in the book ends with a list of "assignments" (i.e., practice) suggestions for using/mastering the features and techniques discussed in each chapter.

In summary, I think this book is the perfect blend of general information and very specific details about the Sony NEX-6. I have owned my NEX-6 for about 6 months now and I've read both the small paper manual and the PDF guide. Both were useful in their own way as references to buttons, icons, and settings. But, both are also very poorly written, designed and illustrated. All in all, this "From Snapshots to Great Shots" book is an example of very solid instructional design combined with a smooth and accessible writing style and lots of very useful and specific content about this particular camera model. I'm very happy with my purchase. I recommend that any new NEX-6 owner buy one, but do get it in print! As I said, the e-book version is a downsized version with far less visual appeal. A book about photography should have visual appeal....don't you think?

The best way to use what is quite a complex little camera

As people have moved away from compact point and shoot cameras to using their smart phone camera for convenience, they have found that the image quality is still a long way from being satisfying. At the other end of the scale, the enthusiast and professional photographer have found that there are many occasions when they do not wish to carry the huge weight of a DSLR, several heavy lens combinations and seek a camera which is small compact and which produces high quality publishable images. We are all fortunate, because within the last eighteen months the compact mirrorless camera has been developed. Having tested several of these cameras my choice is the Sony Nex- 6, which I guess is also your choice, as you are reading this review. The Nex-6 is a truly remarkable and complex camera packed into a compact size.
The menu of the Nex-6 can be intimidating, many of the dials and buttons have dual purpose. The camera menu is attempting to cover the needs of the inexperienced photographer as well as the demands of the professional. The addition of all these customizing options make it a complex camera to use. Without the benefit of Jerod Fosters excellent guide book, digging through the menu could be confusing and time consuming. Jerods book is not a manual, it is a clearly thought out guide on how to use the functions quickly and easily to take great photographs. By using this book you will quickly learn how to know what to use and how to use it. Using the camera and its functions will become second nature, allowing you to obtain constantly high quality still photographs and movies.
For me, one of the best things I obtained from this book is how to make short cuts, such as auto HDR, DRO, hand held twilight, creative style and picture effect , as well as how to customise regularly used functions to avoid constantly digging into the menu.
You will find that as a result of studying this guide alongside your camera that you will be thrilled with its capabilities and ease of operation to transform your photographic practices and the high quality results.

If you are having trouble understanding how to get what you want from the menus - this book will help alot.

Ok, I'm not "OLD" yet, but I can sure see where I'm headed. My first SLR camera from the 70's was a manual focus match needle metered camera and I learned three or four tricks that let me take some great pictures. My second SLR camera was a manual focus aperature /shutter preferred with a program mode camera that I loved. My third camera was a digital auto focus hybred with too many gizmos that I left it in "auto" nearly all the time with dissapointing results. That brings me to the NEX-6, great camera with SLR features in a compact east to carry style - I DON"T understand the manual or the menus. This book is pretty straight forward in explaining the things I desire to do. It boils it down to a few basic steps that you can build off from and get the results you are looking for. The author also takes some time to explain some basic photograpy techniques that we all know, but forget to use.

If you understand how to use this camera right out of the box you don't need this book. But then you wouldn't be reading these reviews, would you? This book will put you on the path to quick success and you will be able to build from the basics set forth here. This book is not for professionals, it's for you and me. I highly recomend this book to anyone who wants to understand and take better pictures with the exceptional Sony NEX-6.

About the Author
Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. He is the coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections, Seventh Edition.

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching nonscience majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.
