About the Author
Marvin Bittinger For over thirty-eight years, Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters. David Ellenbogen David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for twenty-two years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has also taught at St. Michael's College and The University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate, and has been a member ofthe Mathematical Association of America since 1979. He has authored dozens of publications on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures at numerous conferences on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his BA in mathematics from Bates College and his MA in community college mathematics education from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A co-founder of the Colchester Vermont Recycling Program, Professor Ellenbogen has a deep love for the environment and the outdoors, especially in his home state of Vermont. In his spare time, he enjoys playing keyboard in the band Soularium, volunteering as a community mentor, hiking, biking, and skiing. He has two sons, Monroe and Zack.

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she spends time traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp. Judy Penna received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Kansas State University and her graduate degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois. Since then, she has taught at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis and at Butler University, and continues to focus on writing quality textbooks for undergraduate mathematics students. Geoffrey Akst and Sadie Bragg have worked together for many years as professors of mathematics at Borough of Manhattan Community College/City University of New York. They met as graduate students at Teachers College, Columbia University, where they were both working on degrees in the teaching of college mathematics. The emphasis on applications in their texts reflects a concern they share for helping students understand why the topics to be studied are useful. Dr. Akst for years has begun his classes with the payoff question: Why is this material worth learning? A native New Yorker, he enjoys surfing the Web, listening to good music, and traveling to exciting places. Dr. Bragg, who began her career in math education as a high school geometry teacher, credits her teachers with inspiring her love for mathematics and an appreciation of its utility. A transplanted Virginian, she spends her time with her family and her beautiful grandchildren.

About the Author

Kirk Trigsted teaches mathematics at the University of Idaho and has been Director of the Polya Mathematics Center since its inception in 2001. Kirk has taught with MyMathLab for many years, and has contributed to the videos for several Pearson books. Kirk is also actively involved with the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT).

Made Me Enjoy Algebra For The First Time

I am a "non-traditional" student who has returned to school to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine (currently I am a "pre-vet" student). I had "tested into" the Calculus sequence; but since it has been over ten years since I last took a college level mathematics course (and significantly over that since I last had algebra), I decided to take College Algebra first to "get back in the swing of math". I should also mention that although I was "OK" in math it was never my favorite subject. This course changed all that, and it was due, in large part, to the online course material, and online textbook, from Kirk Trigsted. I went from making "B"s in previous mathematics classes to making a very high "A" in this one (and 70% of my course grade came from tests that did not allow the use of this book). I also can now say that I really, truly, love the study of mathematics.

Everyone deserves a teacher as passionate, informative, and easy to understand as Kirk. The way in which the textbook is written makes it easy to follow. However, the interactive portions of the book, especially the step by step videos from Kirk himself, make this textbook the very best Algebra textbook I have ever come across. During the practice problems if you don't understand how to perform a task, you can even press the "Help Me Solve This" button for detailed step by step interactive analysis of how to approach, and solve, this particular problem. This is like having a personal math tutor with you ever step of the way.

I highly recommend this product for professors of College Algebra as a great way to get your students motivated and excited about the subject matter. If you are student who has been assigned this text, then feel free to rejoice, because this textbook will make it easy, and fun, to learn the material. You might just decide, like me, that you actually like math for a change.

This online math program is very thorough. It starts with a review chapter, examples, and everything you need to get a review of previously learned math problems. There are videos you can look at as often as you need to review how to do a new problem.

Brand new code as advertised

Bought this as a requirement for my College Algebra class. It was $40 cheaper on Amazon than at the school's bookstore. So I ordered it with fingers crossed hoping the code was unused (people get scammed buying used codes). The package arrived on time and brand new. Registered online with MyMathLab and it worked! Very pleased I had no issues and would recommend.

Some mistakes

After reading good reviews, I asked for and received this book as a birthday present late last year. As I flipped through the first section (Pharmacology), however, I noticed some glaring mistakes and omissions which have made me doubt the veracity of the info throughout the whole book.

Some mistakes: dexamethazone is listed as 'long acting' IM, IV, SC, PO, while Depo-Medrol is listed as intermediate acting (along with prednisone); pimobendan listed as 'available in Canada and Europe'--t's been available in this country for quite a few years, and this is the 2009 edition I'm reviewing; benazepril is listed as an "Angiotensin Converting Enzyme" (!) rather than an ACE-inhibitor, while enalapril is listed as an ACE-I all by itself; enalapril is listed as 'give on an empty stomach'; Pepto-Bismol carries no warning not to use in cats; and the most egregious mistake is listing methylene blue as a reversal agent for Valium! Yep, it's listed in the 'antidotes and reversing agents' section, and of course doesn't carry a warning about how it kills cats. There is no mention of flumazenil so I don't know what was supposed to be listed as a reversal for benzodiazepines. The methylene blue is probably in there as an antidote for acetominophen toxicity though it has largely been supplanted by n-acetylcysteine b/c of safety issues.

Some omissions: imipenem/meropenem from antibiotics; fentanyl from opioids; atenolol and sotalol not listed as beta-blockers (these are the two most commonly used in cats & dogs); mexiletine and sotalol from anti-arrhythmics (the two most common used PO in dogs); fenbendazole is now an accepted treatment for Giardia (not listed as such); hydrochlorathiazide from diuretics; maropitant from anti-emetics; xylazine from emetics.

I would hesitate to trust the book now because I can see so many errors in the info I'm already familiar with--who knows how many mistakes are in the info I am not familiar with? The purpose of a reference book isn't, of course, to read and then have to verify the info independently; I just want to read it and trust it which I certainly can't do now (seriously, methylene blue??).

Wonderful little book!

This tiny little book is packed with information that a Vet Tech uses on a regular basis, as well as some that's a bit more obscure. All of it is pertinent to the job though. I'm glad I found it!

Since there is no description for the product listed by Amazon, nor a picture, I thought it would be useful to note that the Clinical Companion for Fundamentals of Nursing is included in the package. I purchased this item separately for $25, not expecting for it to be included in this package. So if you are needing both, this set is perfect for you.

Good beginning nursing book

We did not have a choice regarding books when taking nursing classes, but this is one of them that I wouldn't have minded choosing. The layout is very structured, which is good when you just start nursing and have no idea what and how much information you will need to know. Now that I have started to practice and am still new to nursing, I have gone back and begun to reread this book. It is interesting how much stuff I missed the first time through!

Great for MOC, too

I took the MOC exam today, 15 years after my original ABPN certification. Not that easy to find study resources for the Maintenance of Certification exam. This general Boards review is appropriate for the MOC, though MOC is more clinical mgt. and less basic science than Part I.

PROs:
-A bargain: hundreds of dollars less than the modules and journal courses offered by the APA press (especially if you aren't a member) and way less than the MOC course ($1500) I located.
-Comprehensive: 600 exam q's divided into 4 tests, new material and some already covered in each one.
-Extremely time-efficient, with correct answer and the 4 incorrect answers explained with each question.
-Exact format of exam: computerized (if you use the disc), single answer multiple choice, includes automatic 90 second countdown timer( MOC is 200 q's in 5 hours).
-Very detailed neurology and genetic syndromes**(SEE BELOW)

CONs:
-1 or 2 answers give incorrect info, the one I recall is pinpoint pupils are a sign of heroin withdrawal. A different question correctly lists that with signs of heroin intoxication. It's 2 (I think) that I caught, a tiny percentage, just something to be aware of.
-Minor issue, kind of funny, a little distracting, is missing hyphens throughout, thus 7090% of pt's have so and so, treatment of SAD is 26 hours of bright light daily.

Differences vs MOC: Many more TCA q's in book, many more q's about ego defenses and appropriate psychotherapy options for X,Y or Z disorder on test, neuro is much more basic on test.

**-Very detailed neurology and genetic syndromes: for the MOC only, much complex than the exam. CAVEAT: This probably doesn't apply to the initial ABPN Part I exam. Lindsay's review here found the neuro on target. A great resource to pair with this book's explanations of stroke and other neuropathology syndromes is the Washington U med school's awesome Neuroscience Tutorial [...]

I bought this book to prepare for the PRITE exams during my residency and found it to be of good educational value.Some questions are very easy but overall I would recommend book to anyone preparing for a great score on PRITE.

Excellent Prep

I just got my results from the Part I Boards. I did well and this book was definitely important to that. Many of the questions seemed to be right on the test. This was one of my primary test aids. Of course the other must have is Kaufman's book on Clinical Neurology. Pretty much with these two you will pass. I will add that for the psychiatry I seemed to be asked a lot of Axis II questions: A lot about defense mechanisms important on each of the personality disorders. This book really didn't cover Axis II at all, so be sure to supplement in some way.
