About the Author
Marvin Bittinger For over thirty-eight years, Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters. David Ellenbogen David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for twenty-two years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has also taught at St. Michael's College and The University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate, and has been a member ofthe Mathematical Association of America since 1979. He has authored dozens of publications on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures at numerous conferences on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his BA in mathematics from Bates College and his MA in community college mathematics education from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A co-founder of the Colchester Vermont Recycling Program, Professor Ellenbogen has a deep love for the environment and the outdoors, especially in his home state of Vermont. In his spare time, he enjoys playing keyboard in the band Soularium, volunteering as a community mentor, hiking, biking, and skiing. He has two sons, Monroe and Zack.

It works for me...

I'm a new user of the Adobe Creative Suite. I've been searching for instructional materials for about a year now and quite frankly, the books I've found are not suited to the way I learn. Unlike most software, Adobe products are not structured systems in which the user just plugs in information in a box. Adobe offers an open, free-wheeling platform of tools to accomplish a creative task. This video is an instructional program that starts with a basic explanation of the Adobe program and then proceeds to show how to accomplish a wide range of creative tasks. Materials are assembled in logical, bite-sized segments that you can refer back to, as needed. Russell Viers is the trainer and he is the best I've come across. Ever. I offer my highest recommendations for this video course. This is an excellent means of learning to use Adobe software.

Beginner? This is an Entry into a Pro Environment

Since we were so impressed with Learn Photoshop by Video, we wanted to dive into the same video2brain series for InDesign. I paid no attention to who the authors of this were, Russ Viers and Jose Ramos. I don't personally know these guys but I am part of a same private InDesign forum which they are on.

There are zillions of ways to teach InDesign. Many of them are just regurgitations of what everyone else is doing. These guys take a refreshingly new direction. It's admittedly a little risky. For some reason this series is always tagged as a "beginner" direction. Yet, from the introduction chapter forward, these guys just dive right in and immerse the audience in some professional-level conversation. I appreciate that they don't talk down to you. They ask you to step up.

To help you to understand where I am coming from, like Russ, I go back to Aldus PageMaker 1.0. The founder of Aldus personally handed me a beta version of the thing. I also begrudgingly worked in QuarkXPress 3.2 and Ventura Publisher 1.0 before Adobe showed us a beta version of InDesign (ID) and we fell in love, immediately. It was so Photoshop and Illustrator-like, we were right at home. We knocked-out three, four, maybe five projects before cracking a users manual.

I must confess that Janet & I are the sort of people who have to have a bunch of unexplored books, DVDs, CDs sitting around or we get a little insecure. It's like our pantry and refrigerators are getting low. I ordered this learning tool expecting to get to it later this month. However, I was a little stumped on an InDesign project, in front of me. I tried to find answers in the users manual. It wasn't there. I went to lynda.com, Classroom in a Book, and Adobe TV, with no luck. I cracked open this video2brain package. Halfway through one ID video2brain lesson, "Bingo!" my answers were there.

Now, before I throw all the roses and none of the realistic concerns, because of checking many already mentioned resources, plus a few others, I expect fresh new examples. I am disappointed that these guys resort to some of the stuff Adobe puts out there as soon as the product is launched. To be fair, we have done the same, with Adobe's permission. In the first few days, after the product was announced, it allows us to show something, on our website, before we have a chance to create some samples of our own, with the retail version of the software app. I expect better of a permanent DVD tool.

Is this a "beginners" tool? You have to watch the whole eighteen plus hours to determine that. Due the way this is organized, it does not seem that way, at first. If you're a complete and total newbie, you'll be frustrated in the introduction section. Hang in there. Much like the Classroom in a Book series, these guys toss out a bunch of what makes ID cool, in the first hour. They eventually ease you into the basics, including some things which no one bothers to talk about, like what's really behind the Welcome screen and the learning resources available to you.

It sounds like I have been in this so long that I know EVERYTHING about InDesign. This video2brain offering proves otherwise. There are aspects of doing a variety of things which I must confess got past me. Russ takes you through what initially would seem like some pretty mundane exercises: a letterhead, an envelope, a business card. Don't be fooled; these are just his launching pads. He has some real goodies in these lessons. For REAL entry-level users, they are going to need to replay some of these one or two more times. I like that. It tells me that if you really are a beginner, coming into InDesign from something like a Word-only document creation existence, this is not a watch-it-once video package. It's a reference resource that you'll come back to again and again.

Don't be confused into thinking that this is one of those many quick-start packages which you can breeze through and get the basics. You're going to need to sit down and pay attention, even if you are an intermediate user.

It's well-worth your $60 (or around $38 in the ever movable amazon world). Does this mean that I think it's the perfect package?

No.

I just don't get the book which is woven into the sturdily designed package. It's a great idea but it seems a little thin. The producers of this series needs to think about at least 208 to 256 pages to make it all worthwhile. On top of that is the previously mentioned use of Adobe-provided examples.

It's not a solid five star box. It's more like four and a half or four and three quarters. Since amazon doesn't allow fractional ratings, I have to round it up to five.

Fantastic DVD for InDesign Users on any Level of Expertise

My workplace, a free weekly shopper ad agency, needed to upgrade to iMacs this past year. While taking the leap to all-in-one Macs, we also upgraded from Creative Suite 2 to Creative Suite 5.

We have used Multi-Ad Creator since 1991 as our main ad design program, but since buying our other software in Adobe CS suites, and InDesign is part of that suite, it paid for us to move towards InDesign implementation.

Change is a complicated thing at best and when you have people working in the same ad layout program for the past 20 years, that change to another product somewhat unknown to them is a big deal.

I did some research for my workplace and found these videos. We bought all three - InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. My workplace reviewed them over the past few months and everyone felt very good about how the programs were shown to work. The three DVDs have helped make our transition to all things CS5 much more smooth for us.

I had the experience of watching another InDesign training video online before reviewing video2brain's InDesign training video. I completed the first video series but it was hard for me to take much away from that experience because what they taught was presented in such a dry manner. Both Viers and Ramos demonstrate how easy it is to apply InDesign to your every day work flow. Both instructors kept things flowing smoothly with their demonstrations and never could a viewer call the experience boring nor dry. The way these instructors presented their tips kept the viewer wanting to learn more.

Ramos has an accent where as Viers does not. Therefore Ramos was a little bit harder to understand in the beginning of the switchover from something Viers covered to something Ramos covered. But after hearing Ramos for just a little bit it was easy to catch on what he was teaching the user.

The video2brain video setup was great because you could simply go from the beginning to the end of the DVD, through all 12 chapters, hitting 'next video' once you completed one item. Or the viewer could select a certain section from the Table of Contents to review. That is a big help in quickly finding a solution to a problem you might stumble upon on while working in InDesign.

At the end of each chapter is a 'Test yourself' section that allows you to select the words that complete the statements on the page. So you can review everything you have studied.

I would highly suggest any beginner or experienced user in InDesign to buy this DVD. You will not be disappointed.

About the Author
CHARLES H. CORWIN, educated at San Jose State University, has been perfecting his approach to teaching students chemistry for the past two decades. Through special National Science Foundation funding, he studied creative learning systems early in his career, focusing specifically on the introductory chemistry course. It is from these early seeds that "Introductory Chemistry: Concepts & Connections "has grown. At present, his active areas of research are web-based chemical education, conceptual and algorithmic learning models, and collaborative learning and group work.
Currently, Charles Corwin is a professor of chemistry at American River College, where he was recognized with a teacher of the year award for innovative teaching in 1994. He was also the recipient of an alumni teaching award from Purdue University in 1998.

Great for beginning/non-clinical coders

Excellent book for first-time coders/non-clinical coders. Not so much for straight A&P, as I don't think it's probably specific enough and the (plentiful) illustrations are not quite detailed enough. BUT it is specifically for ICD-10, and it's great for that. The online study resources are great and I use them daily. Would definitely recommend.

I Love It. Took Medical Terminology back in 2012 for ...

I Love It. Took Medical Terminology back in 2012 for two semesters, but never had Anatomy. Looking forward to getting in deep with this book, before moving on to my coding. Spent six years as a medical coder and biller for in-house patients, but, have been out of that field now since 2009. Since ICD-10 in coming, I will have to start my coding career all over again. At least this time, I already have my college degree to go with it.

This book is a great source and review for medical coding. It gives good descriptions and is written well. I'm not sure if it would be detailed enough for physicians but it's a good start.

About the Author

Kirk Trigsted teaches mathematics at the University of Idaho and has been director of the Polya Mathematics Center since its inception in 2001. Kirk has taught with MyMathLab for many years, and has contributed to the videos for several Pearson books. Kirk is also actively involved with the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT).

Randy Gallaher is a professor of mathematics at Lewis & Clark Community College, where he has taught since 1997. Prior to this position, Randy taught high school and middle school mathematics for five years in Missouri. He holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Southeast Missouri State University and has completed additional graduate coursework at both Missouri State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has coauthored ancillary materials for numerous math and statistics textbooks and has worked as a math author on several grant projects for the Illinois Community College Board. Randy is married with three children and spends most evenings actively involved in their activities. In his limited free time, he loves to fish the small rivers and streams of southern Missouri.

Kevin Bodden is a professor of mathematics at Lewis & Clark Community College where he has taught since 1999. He holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and a master’s degree in engineering from Purdue University. He has authored or co-authored ancillary material for numerous textbooks ranging from basic college math to calculus and statistics. He has contributed videos for several of these textbooks and has authored math content on grant projects for the Illinois Community College Board. Kevin is married with three children and is actively involved in their school and extracurricular activities. In his spare time, he enjoys soccer, camping, and geocaching.
