About the Author
Amy Baldwin has been teaching college success, writing, and literature at Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock, Arkansas since 1996. Among the many hats community college faculty like Amy wear, she has also served as the professional development coordinator and co-director of the Achieving the Dream initiative. She has taught on-campus and online classes since 1999 and has presented nearly 100 workshops across the U.S. on the topics of numerous topics including student success, research writing, academic integrity, and online teaching. She has also written for The Teaching Professor, Community College Week,and Student Health 101. Her texts, The First Generation Experience 1st edition and The Community College Experience PLUS 2nd edition, are published by Pearson. Amy received her B.A. in English Literature from Rhodes College and her M.A. in English Literature from Washington University. She is currently working on her doctorate in higher education, with a focus on student retention. Amy lives with her husband and two children in Little Rock, Arkansas.

This book is changing my life. Designed for people who shouldn't have passed 2nd grade let alone gotten into any college, and probably written by those same people. This is a gripping page turner full of insight and experienced knowledge. Did you know that the unit of measurement colleges use that usually equals the amount of time you are in class each week is "attendance"? wow.

The worst book I've ever read.

"Take bottled water in your backpack and drink it throughout the day." (p107)
I can say without a doubt this is the worst book I have ever read. This book and its accompanying website are quite possibly the biggest waste of time a student may ever experience. The roughly 400 pages of fluff material cover absolutely none of the relevant topics a college student in 2013 should be concerned about, namely:
-What is the cost/benefit of a Liberal Arts degree?
-How does one assess which skills will be in high demand in 2 or 4 years?
-Is sacrificing 2 or 4 years in the workforce and acquiring $20,000-$100,000 in debt and no practical experience a good idea?
Instead, Amy focuses on topics that children should have mastered in elementary school. This includes:
-How to learn by reading printed material.
-Facts and other information are stored in the human brain.
-Nutritional labels are helpful for selecting food to eat.
-How to be courteous and work with others.
-The importance of setting goals.
I admit elementary school may be a stretch for the third topic, but I believe my point is clear. The real tragedy here is not the book, by itself. It is the fact that you will likely be forced to read every word, as your course will likely use the accompanying website to measure your "mastery" of the subject (low level decision making? I'm still not sure what the subject "is"). This means you'll have to memorize every useless term or topic detail such as the section names in the Cornell note taking system.
This is in contrast to real subjects with substantive material which allow you to skip sections you're already familiar with. If you already know how to calculate the effect of friction, you can skip that section in a Physics book and still make an A. In a class that uses this book and website the material is all completely useless and irrelevant, so time must be spent memorizing and regurgitating for quizzes and tests.
Does Amy Baldwin actually believe this book is helpful, or does she live in such academic isolation from practical reality that she actually believes she is doing humanity a service by forcing kids to purchase this drivel?
I gained nothing whatsoever from this book and consider every moment reading it and using the website to have been the most wasted of my entire life. Amy Baldwin took them from me, and I will never have them back.
